What is culture?

In today’s English class we talked about what is culture. The whole class brainstormed together and we came up with some great ideas about what we think culture is.

What is culture?

I want you to think about this question on the board

Culture is the little waste that people untied
A thing that traditional people do
The believe of tradition
A religious believe
Holiday
Festivals
Groups of people that feel the same way
Groups of people who view the world in the same way
Art skills, customs
How to deal with problems some time
What people believed happened in the past

Look at Chinese culture, what did china believe hundreds of years ago (Teacher)

Dragons, and that china was the centre of the world
The Chinese character for china also means middle

The way of living

Surprising no one said food yet (Teacher)

Icons

I’m goanna put icons together with symbols (Teacher)

Music
Architectonically, you have lots of Japanese styled house in Japan
People are different
Animals, like Chinese believe in dragons
Literature

That’s enough
That a very comprehensive (Teacher)
We are about to study poems from different culture.
Why is it important to study these poems?

We can learn other perspectives
Because were a international school
We learn about ourselves
When you get older you start traveling by yourself, you are not only starting to learn about cultures, but also about ourselves (Teacher)
We can learn how they are living
We learn a variety of languages

Who has ever been to Singapore? (Teacher)
They don’t just speak British, they speak it with a huge accent
They say soke instead of delicious.
If you go to countries like Jamaica
They speak English but not as straight forward
We study different poems of different cultures. They speak English in different ways.
Chinese people found it very difficult to write English,
Who here is Chinese
Writing a essay in Chinese is way different that when you write an essay in English. (Teacher)

We are going to do a poem that is called ‘Island Man’
It’s about a man on the Caribbean island.
It’s a typical tropical island.
